Methodology & Sources

How The Start-Up Risk Diagnostic works and where the data comes from.

Scoring Methodology

The Start-Up Risk Diagnostic uses a non-linear scoring engine with conditional multipliers. Each of the 20 questions maps to one of five risk dimensions (Schedule, Cost, Safety, Quality, Regulatory). Base scores are calculated per dimension, then modified by conditional multipliers that trigger when specific combinations of answers are detected. This prevents the "additive scoring bias" where a medium score on everything hides a critical single-dimension risk.

Industry Data

The risk benchmarks and failure patterns used by this tool are derived from publicly available industry data, project reports, academic research, and regulatory filings covering over 190 verified projects across LNG, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Refining, Offshore, Renewables, and Mining sectors.

Limitations

This tool is a diagnostic aid, not a professional audit. It is calibrated against published industry data and verified failure patterns, but every project is unique. The tool cannot account for specific contractual terms, local market conditions, or organizational culture. Results should be used as a basis for discussion, not as a final verdict.
